A microscopic cover, also known as a cover slip or cover glass, is a thin, flat, and transparent piece of glass or plastic that is used to cover and protect a specimen on a microscope slide: Cover slips have several functions, including:

FlatteningKeeping solid specimens flat and liquid samples in a flat layer of even thickness
ProtectingProtecting the sample from dust and accidental contact, and protecting the microscope objective from the sample
SealingSealing the sample to the slide to delay dehydration and oxidation
Preventing contactPreventing contact between the immersion fluid and the sample in oil or water immersion microscopes

Cover slips are typically made of high-quality optical glass, such as borosilicate, but can also be made from quartz glass or transparent plastic. They are available in various sizes, including 18mm x 18mm, 22mm x 22mm, and 24mm x 24mm. The standard thickness for cover glasses is 0.17 millimeters.
