  • Physical Properties:It is less dense than water, insoluble in water, and vapors are heavier than air. It has a boiling point below 35C, a melting point of -133.72C, and a density of 0.66 g/cm at 20C. 
  • Chemical Reactions:2-Methyl-2-butene can participate in various reactions, including forming host-guest complexes with macrocycles, reactions with ozone to form carbonyl derivatives, and reactions with active chlorine formulations, impacting its photodecomposition. It can also be used as a precursor for peroxyacetyl nitrate. 
  • Applications:It's used as a precursor in the synthesis of other compounds, like those with prenyl-type double bonds via cross-metathesis. It also serves as a model for studying the combustion kinetics of branched alkenes. Additionally, it's used in the partial hydrogenation of poly-ynes with pyridine to form -hydroxy polyunsaturated fatty acids. 
  • Safety:Merck Millipore notes that it is highly flammable and harmful if swallowed. It may cause skin irritation and drowsiness or dizziness, and is suspected of causing genetic defects and cancer. It is also toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
