Ferric chloride is a common iron compound in the +3 oxidation state and is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water. It's a Lewis acid and a mild oxidizing agent, and can be used as a water cleaner and metal etchant. Ferric chloride can be prepared in anhydrous form by passing dry chlorine gas over heated iron metal.
