Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic, waxy, solid petrochemical that is used as an antioxidant and preservative in many products:

Food: BHA is used as a preservative in food to prevent oils from oxidizing and becoming rancid.
Food packaging: BHA is used in the plastic or wax paper liners of food packaging to keep food fresh.
Animal feed: BHA is used as an antioxidant in animal feed.
Cosmetics: BHA is used in cosmetics.
Pharmaceuticals: BHA is used in pharmaceuticals.
Rubber: BHA is used in rubber.
Petroleum products: BHA is used in petroleum products.

BHA is a mixture of 3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole and 2-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole. The proportions of these two compounds vary depending on the intended use of the BHA:

Food-grade BHA: Contains over 85% 3-BHA and less than 15% 2-BHA.
Cosmetic-grade BHA: Contains 90% 3-BHA and 8% 2-BHA.

BHA is volatile and can transfer into the environment, where it has been found in indoor dust, surface water, groundwater, sewage, sludge, sediment, ocean, and mollusks. It has also been detected in human plasma and nails.
