It is a dark red liquid composed of phenol and basic fuchsin. This solution is a key component of the Ziehl-Neelsen staining method, a differential staining technique. Key features and uses:
  • Composition: A mixture of phenol and basic fuchsin. 
  • Color: Dark red liquid. 
  • Staining Principle: Carbol fuchsin is a lipid-soluble stain that penetrates the waxy cell walls of acid-fast bacteria. 
  • Application: Used in the Ziehl-Neelsen staining method to identify acid-fast bacteria like Mycobacterium.
