Chromogenic coliform medium with a sterile membrane filter is a ready-to-use microbiological test kit used to detect and count E. coli and total coliform bacteria in water samples
How It Works
  • Membrane Filtration: The test sample should be filtered through a sterile membrane filter having pore size of 0.22 / 0.45.. Bacteria are trapped on top of the filter paper. [1]
  • Nutrient Pad: The dry nutrient pad is rehydrated using sterile water before placing the filter on top. [1]
  • Chromogenic Substrates: Special chemical dyes inside the medium react with enzymes from the bacteria. E. coli and other coliforms grow into distinct colored colonies for easy identification
  • Test Directions
    1. Filter the water sample through the provided sterile membrane filter.
  • Rehydrate the absorbent pad with 2.0 to 2.5 ml of sterile or purified water.
  • Transfer the filter paper carefully using sterile forceps onto the wet pad.
  • Incubate the plate according to product instructions (usually around 35C37C for 21 to 24 hours).
  • Count the colored colonies to calculate the concentration of bacteria as CFU/ml (colony-forming units per milliliter)
