  • Purpose:The condenser's primary function is to condense the solvent vapor produced during the heating process in the Soxhlet apparatus. This condensation allows the solvent to cycle back into the sample holder, continuously extracting the desired compound from the solid material. 
  • Types:A common type of condenser used in Soxhlet extraction is the Allihn condenser, characterized by its long, cylindrical shape with multiple bulbs that increase the surface area for efficient condensation. Another type is the Dimroth condenser, known for its concentric tube design that provides even more effective cooling. 
  • How it works:The hot solvent vapor rises from the boiling flask into the condenser. Cold water is circulated through the jacket (or the inner tube in some designs) of the condenser, causing the vapor to cool and condense into liquid. The condensed liquid then drips back down into the sample thimble, where it continues to dissolve more of the target compound.
