Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) is a liquid culture medium used for growing both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, particularly in sterility testing. It's often packaged in plastic bottles and contains ingredients like peptone, yeast extract, glucose, L-cystine, sodium thioglycollate, and a small amount of agar. The medium's pink ring in suspension and pH of 7.1 0.2 helps to identify different types of microorganisms. Key Features and Uses:
  • Sterility Testing:FTM is widely used for testing the sterility of biological products, pharmaceuticals, and other materials, as it can support the growth of both aerobes and anaerobes. 
  • Cultivation:It's a general-purpose medium for cultivating a variety of microorganisms, including fastidious anaerobes and aerobes. 
  • Oxygen Tolerance:FTM's unique composition allows for the determination of the oxygen requirements of different bacteria. 
  • Composition:The medium contains a reducing agent (L-cystine and sodium thioglycollate) and a small amount of agar to help maintain anaerobic conditions in the lower part of the bottle. 
  • Indicator:The presence of resazurin dye helps to indicate the oxygen level in the medium, with the lower, yellowish part indicating anaerobic conditions and the pink ring in suspension indicating oxygen.
