Product Description

Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is a bright blue, inorganic compound with the chemical formula CuSO4.5H2O. It's the most common hydrate of copper(II) sulfate, and is also known as blue vitriol, bluestone, vitriol of copper, and Roman vitriol. Here are some uses for copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate:

Emetic: It's used as an antidote for phosphorus poisoning.
Algae prevention: It's used to prevent algae growth.
Catalyst: It's used as a Lewis acid catalyst to promote organic transformations. It can also act as a redox catalyst when combined with other oxidizing agents.
Agricultural purposes: It's used as a pesticide, germicide, feed additive, and soil additive.
Hematinic: It's sometimes used as a hematinic in certain forms of nutritional anemia, especially in children.

Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate dissolves in water exothermically to form the aquo complex [Cu(H2O)6]2+. The anhydrous form of copper(II) sulfate is white.
