  • Identification of S. pneumoniae:The primary purpose of Optochin discs is to differentiate Streptococcus pneumoniae from other streptococci that may exhibit similar characteristics on blood agar. 
  • Mechanism of Action:Optochin (ethylhydrocupreine hydrochloride) inhibits the growth of S. pneumoniae while generally not inhibiting other alpha-hemolytic streptococci like Viridans streptococci.
