About Periodic Acid SQ 100g Qualigens

Qualigens Periodic Acid SQ is a high-purity, laboratory-grade reagent supplied in a solid crystalline form (colorless to pale yellow, hygroscopic). It is primarily used in analytical and synthetic chemical processes, and notably in histopathology staining methods like the Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction. Description and Properties
  • Form: Solid crystalline powder (hygroscopic; may become pale yellow on exposure to air).
  • Purity: Guaranteed minimum 99% assay (iodometric).
  • Grade: SQ (presumably a "Special Quality" or similar high-purity laboratory grade), ensuring consistent performance and compliance with stringent quality standards.
  • Solubility: Soluble in water and alcohols; a 10% w/v solution in water should be almost clear and colorless.
  • Chemical Nature: A moderately strong oxidizing agent and weak acid, existing in orthoperiodic acid (HIO) or metaperiodic acid (HIO) forms.
  • Stability: Characterized by a stable crystalline structure for long-term storage when kept in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and incompatible chemicals.

    • Histopathology & Biochemistry: Used as a key component in glycoprotein and carbohydrate stains, such as the PAS stain. It oxidizes vicinal diols to produce aldehyde groups, which can then be stained a magenta color with Schiff's reagent to identify specific tissues and cells.
    • Organic Synthesis: Acts as an oxidizing agent, particularly in the oxidative cleavage of 1,2-diols (glycols) to prepare dialdehydes or ketones, which is useful in determining the structure of carbohydrates.
    • Industrial Applications: Used in the paper industry to fortify the wet strength of materials like photographic paper.
