Himedia's MYP Agar Base is used for the selective isolation and identification of Bacillus cereus and pathogenic Staphylococci. The medium uses Phenol Red to indicate mannitol fermentation (yellow colonies), egg yolk to reveal lecithinase activity (white precipitate zones), and Polymyxin B Sulfate to inhibit Gram-negative bacteria. Purpose 

• Isolate and identify pathogenic Staphylococci and Bacillus species.
• Differentiate Bacillus cereus from other Bacillus species.

• Peptone and Meat Extract:Provide nitrogen, carbon, vitamins, and minerals for bacterial growth. 
• D-Mannitol:A carbohydrate source that, when fermented by bacteria, produces acid and lowers the pH. 
• Phenol Red:A pH indicator that turns colonies yellow when mannitol is fermented, indicating a mannitol-fermenting organism. 
• Egg Yolk Emulsion:A differential component that produces a white precipitate zone around lecithinase-producing colonies, such as Staphylococcus aureus and some Bacillus species. 
• Polymyxin B Sulfate:A selective agent that restricts the growth of Gram-negative bacteria, like E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 
• Agar:The solidifying agent that provides the gel-like consistency for the medium. 

• Yellow colonies with a white precipitate zone:Indicates a mannitol-fermenting, lecithinase-producing organism (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus). 
• Yellow colonies without a white precipitate zone:Suggests a mannitol-fermenting, lecithinase-negative organism (e.g., Bacillus subtilis). 
• No yellow color with a white precipitate zone:Indicates a non-mannitol-fermenting, lecithinase-positive organism (e.g., Bacillus cereus).
