About Potassium Iodide ER Qualigens 100g

Potassium iodide (KI) is a chemical compound, an inorganic salt, composed of potassium (K+) and iodide (I-) ions. It's a white, crystalline solid that readily dissolves in water and is known for its uses in medicine, nutrition, and various industrial applications. Chemical Formula and Structure:
  • The chemical formula for potassium iodide is KI.
  • It's an ionic compound formed by the electrostatic attraction between potassium cations (K+) and iodide anions (I-).
  • The structure is similar to sodium chloride (NaCl), with each potassium ion surrounded by six iodide ions and vice versa, according to the cubic crystal system.
Properties:
  • Appearance: Colorless to white, cubical crystals or powder.
  • Taste: Saline and bitter.
  • Solubility: Highly soluble in water, also soluble in alcohol, acetone, and glycerol.
  • Hygroscopic: Absorbs moisture from the air and can be slightly deliquescent.
  • Oxidation: Can oxidize in air, turning yellow due to the formation of potassium carbonate and elemental iodine.
  • Melting Point: 680C (1258F).
  • Boiling Point: 1330C (2426F).
Preparation:
  • Potassium iodide is typically prepared by reacting potassium hydroxide with iodine.
  • It can also be produced by reacting hydrogen iodide with potassium bicarbonate.
  • Industrially, it can be made by reacting potassium carbonate with iodine.
Uses:
  • Medicine:Used as a nutritional supplement, expectorant, and in the treatment of certain thyroid conditions and skin disorders.
  • Nuclear Radiation:In a nuclear emergency, potassium iodide can protect the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine.
  • Industrial:Used as a reagent in iodometric titrations, in film photography, and as an additive in table salt (to prevent iodine deficiency).
