About Reinforced Clostridial Agar 500g Himedia

Reinforced Clostridial Agar (RCA) is a non-selective medium used for the cultivation and enumeration of Clostridia and other anaerobic bacteria. It is specifically designed to encourage the growth of Clostridia from small inocula and to achieve the highest viable cell counts. Key Features and Properties:
  • Non-selective:RCA is a non-selective medium, meaning it does not contain ingredients that inhibit the growth of certain bacteria while favoring others. 
  • Enriched:It is enriched with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to support the growth of Clostridia and other anaerobic bacteria. 
  • Used for:
    • Cultivating Clostridia and other anaerobes. 
    • Enumerating Clostridia in various samples, including food and biological samples. 
    • Studies of spore-forming anaerobes, especially in dairy products. 
    • Microbiological examination of non-sterile products. 
  • Typical Formula:
    • Contains peptones, yeast extract, dextrose, sodium chloride, soluble starch, and cysteine hydrochloride. 
    • Sodium acetate acts as a buffer. 
  • Principle:
    • Peptic digest of animal tissue, beef extract, yeast extract, starch, and sodium acetate provide essential nutrients for bacterial metabolism. 
    • Cystine is a reducing agent. 
    • Sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance. 
  • Incubation:Incubation is typically performed anaerobically, meaning in an environment devoid of oxygen. 
  • Differential RCA:A differential version of RCA (DRCM) can be used to identify Clostridia that reduce sulphite, resulting in black colonies. 
  • Applications:Used in food microbiology, clinical microbiology, and other fields where the cultivation and enumeration of Clostridia and other anaerobes are required.
