TCP is used as a flame retardant, a plasticizer in manufacturing, and an antiwear additive in lubricants. It is also used in the sterilization of certain surgical instruments and in many industrial processes.

TCP is toxic by ingestion and skin absorption. The all-ortho isomer of TCP is extremely toxic and is rarely used outside of laboratory studies.
