C.L.E.D. (Cystine-Lactose-Electrolyte-Deficient) Agar with Bromothymol Blue is a specialized solid differential culture medium used for the isolation, enumeration, and identification of urinary tract pathogens
Purpose and Principle
  • Urinary Bacteriology: This medium is recommended for use in urinary bacteriology promoting the growth of all urinary pathogens., as noted by Merck Millipore.
  • Electrolyte Deficiency: Restricting electrolytes restrict the swarming of Proteus species (info from Microbe Online), allowing distinct, isolated colonies to form instead of an overgrowing film.
  • Lactose Fermentation: Bromothymol blue is a pH indicator to differentiate lactose fermenters from non-fermenters., according to Microbe Online. Organisms that ferment lactose produce acid and change the indicator from green-blue to yellow
