Mercuric chloride, also known as mercury(II) chloride, is a white, crystalline, odorless powder with a metallic taste:- Physical propertiesSolid at 20C, with a melting point of 277C and a boiling point of 302C. It has a density of 5.4 g/cm3 and is soluble in ethanol, methanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, and diethyl ester.
- Chemical propertiesHas the empirical formula Cl2Hg and a molecular weight of 271.52. It is unstable in the presence of alkalies and is decomposed by sunlight in the presence of organic matter.
- ToxicityHighly toxic and corrosive to mucous membranes. It was used as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant by Arab physicians in the Middle Ages, but modern medicine has deemed it unsafe.
