• Intended Use: It is a general-purpose, non-selective medium used for the cultivation and enumeration of less fastidious microorganisms. It can be enriched with blood or other biological fluids to grow more fastidious organisms.
• Principle: The medium provides essential nitrogen compounds, carbon, vitamins, and trace ingredients necessary for bacterial growth, with sodium chloride maintaining osmotic equilibrium.
• HiVeg Advantage: This formulation uses plant-based peptones (HiVeg) instead of animal-based ones, making it a vegetarian product. 

Physical SpecificationsWhen in powder form (dehydrated):

• Appearance: Cream to yellow, homogeneous free-flowing powder.
• pH: The reaction of a 2.8% w/v aqueous solution at 25C is pH 7.4 0.2. 

When prepared as a gel:

• Gelling: Forms a firm gel comparable to a 1.5% agar gel.
• Color and Clarity: Light yellow, clear to slightly opalescent gel forms in Petri plates. 

Directions for Preparation

1. Suspend 28.0 grams of the powder in 1000 ml of purified/distilled water.
2. Heat to boiling to fully dissolve the medium.
3. Sterilize by autoclaving at 15 lbs pressure (121C) for 15 minutes.
4. Cool to 45-50C. If enrichment is desired, add 5-10% blood or other sterile biological fluids.
5. Mix well and pour into sterile Petri plates. 

StorageStore the dehydrated powder between 10-30C in a tightly closed container, protected from moisture and light.
