About Styrene Monomer Extrapure 99.5% 500ml SRL

  • Styrene monomer, with a purity of 99.5%, is a clear, colorless to yellowish liquid with a sweet, aromatic odor. It is a crucial chemical building block used in the production of various plastics, including polystyrene, and synthetic rubbers. Due to its reactive nature, it readily polymerizes and can be hazardous if not handled properly. Key Characteristics:
    • Appearance: Clear, colorless to yellowish liquid. 
    • Odor: Sweet, aromatic (in pure form), sharp and unpleasant (in commercial grades). 
    • Purity: 99.5% minimum, as indicated by the "Extrapure" designation. 
    • Boiling Point: Around 145 C (293 F). 
    • Flash Point: Typically around 31 C (87.8 F). 
    • Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents like alcohols and ethers. 
    • Stabilizer: Often contains a stabilizer like 4-tert-butyl catechol (10-15 ppm) to prevent premature polymerization. 
    Chemical Properties:
    • Styrene is prone to polymerization, which can be triggered by heat, light, or oxygen. 
    • It can undergo various reactions, including oxidation, aromatic substitution, and copolymerization. 
    • Reacts with oxygen to form peroxides, which can be explosive at elevated temperatures. 
    Production:
    • Typically produced from petroleum or natural gas by-products, primarily through the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. 
    • Shell Global states the process involves alkylating benzene with ethylene to produce ethylbenzene, which is then dehydrogenated to form styrene. 
    Hazards and Safety:
    • Styrene is classified as a flammable liquid and vapor. 
    • It is a potential carcinogen and can cause adverse health effects upon exposure. 
    • LyondellBasell Industries recommends that adequate safety measures are necessary when handling styrene. 
    • Proper ventilation, personal protective equipment (gloves, respirators), and fire prevention measures are essential.

    Uses:
