The HiMedia product M031 is Xylose-Lysine Deoxycholate Agar (XLD Agar), a selective and differential culture medium used for the isolation and enumeration of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical, food, and water samples. Description and Intended Use
  • Function: It is a selective medium that inhibits the growth of most Gram-positive bacteria using sodium deoxycholate, while the differential properties allow for the visual distinction of enteric pathogens based on carbohydrate fermentation and hydrogen sulfide production.
  • Target Organisms: Primarily used to detect Salmonella and Shigella species. It differentiates them from non-pathogenic enteric bacteria (like most E. coli).
  • Applications:
    • Clinical diagnostics: Screening fecal samples for enteric pathogens.
    • Food and water safety testing: Detecting contamination in meat, dairy, and water products.
    • Research: Studying gastrointestinal infections and microbial growth.
  • Key Ingredients: Contains yeast extract (nutrients), xylose, lactose, and sucrose (fermentable carbohydrates), L-lysine (for differentiation), sodium thiosulphate and ferric ammonium citrate (HS indicators), and phenol red (pH indicator).
