About EMB Agar 100g Himedia

EMB agar, specifically from HiMedia, is a microbiological culture medium used for the selective isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative bacteria, particularly enteric bacilli, from clinical and non-clinical samples. It contains lactose and sucrose as fermentable carbohydrates, and eosin Y and methylene blue as differential indicators. These indicators help distinguish between bacteria that can ferment lactose (and other sugars) and those that cannot. Key features and characteristics of HiMedia's EMB Agar:
  • Selective: Inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, allowing primarily Gram-negative bacteria to grow. 
  • Differential: Eosin Y and methylene blue dyes differentiate bacteria based on their ability to ferment lactose and sucrose. 
  • Fermentable carbohydrates: Includes lactose and sucrose, which are metabolized by certain bacteria, producing acidic byproducts. 
  • Colony appearance:
    • Lactose fermenters (e.g., coliforms): Typically produce purplish-black colonies, sometimes with a green metallic sheen, due to the absorption of the dye complex and a drop in pH. 
    • Non-lactose fermenters: Produce colorless or light pink colonies because they don't ferment the sugars and thus don't produce enough acid to cause the dyes to precipitate and be absorbed.
