MacConkey Broth 500g Himedia About

MacConkey Broth is a selective and differential culture medium used to identify coliform bacteria, particularly E. coli, from large samples. It contains lactose, bile salts, and a pH indicator (Bromocresol purple or Neutral Red) to differentiate between lactose fermenting and non-fermenting organisms. Key Features:
  • Selective:Bile salts inhibit the growth of many Gram-positive bacteria, promoting the growth of Gram-negative enteric bacteria. 
  • Differential:Lactose fermenting bacteria produce acid and gas, causing a color change in the medium (usually from purple to yellow or pink) and gas production in a Durham tube. 
  • Purpose:Used for presumptive identification of coliforms, particularly E. coli, in water, wastewater, food, and dairy products. 
  • Indicator:Bromocresol purple or Neutral Red indicates acid production from lactose fermentation. 
In summary: MacConkey Broth allows for the selective growth of Gram-negative bacteria and the differentiation of lactose fermenting organisms, such as E. coli, from non-fermenting ones
